The Chair

Single Channel Hologram Video Installation, 2017

The Chair is a single-channel video and sound installation, part of The Chair – الكرسي series, that addresses the issues of power in an oppressive state and proposes laughter as an act of rebellion and opposition to this power. The main aspect of the sculptural installation is a rotating chair projected using a modified Pepper’s Ghost hologram technique, creating a multiplicity of the image as a reflection on the multiplicity of power relations and the various levels of one’s powerlessness.

The video installation is accompanied by the Anthum of Resistance, 2017. A live recording of 20 people laughing layered on top of one another that gets climatically chaotic the more layers are added. What begins as the sound of someone happily laughing becomes an overwhelming sea of sirens and sadness.
