The Chair – الكرسي

Year 2017

The Chair – الكرسي is a multi-faceted long term project consisting of seven works that investigates symbolic power in Egypt through engaging the concept of the seat of power. The seat, or more aptly, seats of power in Egypt manifests themselves in objectified form, literally as a chair. From the throne that a dictator may occupy as he/she addresses the nation to coffeeshop chairs, where power and one’s proximity to it and positional access, is made plain in this ubiquitous piece of furniture. The project currently includes multimedia installation, text, video, sculpture and performance.

The artworks included in this project are The Chair I and Anthem of Resistance, The Chair II, Manual of Political Laughter, and finally The Chair II, III, IV.
